Thunder Split Series with Blades to End First Half

The Thunder played their first series of the season against the visiting Boston Blades on December 17th and 18th. With captain Jocelyne Larocque and alternate Laura Fortino away playing with the National Women’s Team for the Canada vs United States December Series, the Thunder were looking to pad their position in the CWHL standings going into 2017.

Saturday’s game honoured the community’s first responders, and Thunder Nation came out strong also donating to our food and toy drive! The Blades jump started the game with a goal from Tutino only a minute and a half into the first period. Rattray answered in the second half of the opening frame to tie the game at 1-1. Brampton kick started the second period with a goal from Jones to take the lead, but the Blades came back to tie it up at two goals a piece. The back half of the period saw each team net a power play goal, and the score was once again tied, 3-3, at the end of the second. At 12:08 of the final frame, Kickham scored for the Blades making the score 4-3, and Boston would hold on to the lead to take the win. Erica Howe had 23 saves in the close game. The game’s three stars were Lauren Dahm (BOS), Jess Jones (BRA), and Kayla Tutino (BOS).

Sunday afternoon, the Thunder hit the ice looking to take revenge for the night before. Brampton’s jets were blazing from the first drop of the puck, and Jess Jones scored the first goal less than two minutes after the opening face off! The offence did not slow down, and four more goals were added to the Thunder’s tally: Birchard, Stacey, Rattray, and McParland getting their names on the score sheet, with the first period ending with a score of 5-0. The second period saw the addition of two more Thunder goals, both coming on power plays, from King, and Richards. The third period saw Stacey bury her second goal of the game, and Liz Knox held on for the shutout, stopping all 20 shots faced from Boston. The game’s three stars were Jess Jones, Liz Knox, and Laura Stacey (BRA).

The Thunder’s next games are January 7th and 8th in Calgary against the Inferno.
